Knobjex Manual - deprecated ms access db

Start-up-screen

MS Access can be programmed to automatically start up with a certain form. The form I have chosen for this is called 'Upstart'. It shows the items that can be selected to start up in a batch-way.

After the chosen forms have been opened we'll take a look at them.

Relations Entry

This form was the initial form to enter data into the database. Below is a picture of it:

All records define a Relation between two objects, namely called Object1 and Object2. Objects can be linked in chain when Object2 in record 1 becomes Object1 in record 2. Thus web a of objects wil emerge. This objectal web can be browsed in the Form Relations View. Any form of textual information can be input in this knowledge-format, making Knobjex the 'last' database. However, that does not guarantee that this knowledge-format is optimal for a certain use, so dedicated database will still be usefull. Also, a considerable degree of standardisation is needed to create consistent information.

On top are 2 picklists showed that are sampled when a new record is added, so that these field don't have to be entered all the time. Below that are 2 search fields. The first is to select the category to be searched on, and the second shows the actual search-text. The search uses the native query-filter of Microsoft Access.

Cascade Update. With the goal of simpleness, a single table has been created to hold all data. This means however, that object-links are lost, when the objects are not identical anymore. That is, when object2 in record 1 is changed, and the innitially same-valued object1 in record 2 is left unchanged, the link will be lost. To that end the check-box 'Cascade update' can be checked. This will update all same-valued object to the new value, thus maintaining the objectal web.

Relations View

This form is called this way because it enables to browse the related objects. Lateron, the ability to append records has been added. Adding records is done in the right-hand relations-table by filling the fields Relation and Object2 . The other fields are auto-filled.

The browsing is done by double-clicking any object. This will make the clicked object the 'selected object' of which the left- and right-sided queries are shown. So the objectal web propogates to the left and the right.

Relations can favorised by changing the Change-field to 'f', after which they show up in the favorites-box.

While browsing a history is being created, browsable by the buttons '<' and '>'. Also directly the history-list can be accessed.

Related-ones are objects that are related to Selected object. Until now only a substring-query, but to be extended for multi-wordal objects.

Clicking 'Up' makes the first object of the Left-hand relations the selected-one.

Source and subject are picklists to filter on, but not yet well working I believe.

'Add URL from clip' does add web-addresses from clipboard to the right-hand relations.

'Open file' does open the URL or another file in the associated applications.

'Hide completed' does hide the task-relations that have Change-field = 'h', so that only the open tasks are left.

Clicking 'Left Branche' or 'Right Branche' will query all underlying left resp. right relations, and show them in the lower table RelationsTemp. Depth can be set to show only certain levels.

Deleting branches.
- Query the relevant branche.
- Enable the Del(ete) Branch - button by clicking the checkbox.
- Then you can extra filter the Temp relations, for example only the selected-ones.
- Hitting Del Branch will sample the filtered temp relations, and remove all ID-corresponding permanent relations.

Calendar

The calendar-form does show the task-objects that are given a certain date in the field MsDate (miscelaneous date). Still to betterize, like adding a time-field.

Report Temp Relations

The temporary relations-table (the subform on Relations View which represents a left or right branch) can be printed or previewed thru this report.
